Retro mixers, sphere cakes and pastry tips…

9 West Lothian bakers met at Dobbies this evening for a blether. We welcomed 3 new members and very much look forward to meeting them again at our next baking night. I especially look forward to chatting more with Sheena who I think can share alot of experience with us all.

Many fantastic tips were discussed; use a spare piece of pastry to push pastry into the casing when doing tarts, make sure you put your cake in the oven as soon as the ingredients are mixed as the chemical reactions start immediately, Hobbycraft has a great range of coloured fondant icing and TK Maxx has a fab range of bakeware.

Clare told us about her 50 year old Kenwood mixer which her Dad has refurbished – I certainly hope the one I got last year lasts as long!

Janice shared her tips for making round cakes; a pyrex dish wrapped in damp kitchen roll and tin foil! We ohhhedd and aahhed at the cow cake and christmas pudding cake that was made using this method.

It was  a great opportunity to catch up and I think we all learnt a thing or two!

Details about the next baking night will be posted shortly.

Was lovely to meet the bake club ladies last night, I came home feeling really inspired by all the chat and particularly by the photos of the cakes Janice has made – so much so that I’m going to attempt to make a Gruffalo cake for my little boys 2nd birthday at the end of the month. Something I would never have dreamed of doing before last night, so thank you ladies and I’ll let you know how it went.
